How to Troubleshoot a Slow Computer

Dealing with a slow computer can be frustrating, but the solution to the problem might not be as complicated as one might think. Using a systematic approach to troubleshooting, you can determine what’s causing the performance issues on your particular computer.

When a computer is running slow, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to identify and resolve the issue. Here are a few:

  1. Check for malware: Use antivirus software to scan your computer for malware and remove any infections. If you are a Framework Managed Services client and have any reason to believe your computer may have malware, please get in touch with the help desk immediately.
  2. Check for unnecessary programs running: Use the Task Manager to see which programs are running and end any that are not needed.
  3. Check for low disk space: Ensure your computer has enough free disk space for the operating system to run efficiently.
  4. Check for low memory: Ensure your computer has enough memory (RAM) to run the programs you have open.
  5. Check for high CPU usage: Use the Task Manager to see if any programs are using too much of your computer’s CPU and end them if necessary.
  6. Check for outdated drivers: Ensure all your computer’s drivers are up to date.
  7. Check for background processes: Close any background processes that are not necessary for the computer to function.
  8. Check for dust and debris: Clean the inside of your computer to remove dust and debris that can cause the computer to overheat.
  9. Check for software updates: Make sure all your computer’s software is up to date.
  10. Check for software conflicts: If you have recently installed new software, it might conflict with other software on your computer.

It’s important to remember that different computers may have different causes of slow performance, so it’s important to use a systematic troubleshooting approach to identify and resolve the issue. Additionally, keep in mind that if a computer is too old or has too few resources to run the software you are using, it may not be fixable by only troubleshooting, and upgrading or replacing the computer may be necessary.
