How to Use Task Manager on a Computer

The Task Manager is a built-in tool in Windows that provides information about the processes and programs running on your computer and the resources they are using.

To use the Task Manager on a computer, you can follow these steps:

  1. Open the Task Manager: Press the Ctrl + Shift + Esc keyboard shortcut or right-click the taskbar and select “Task Manager.”
  2. View the running processes: By default, the Task Manager will open to the “Processes” tab, which displays a list of all the processes currently running on your computer, including background processes. You can sort the processes by name, CPU usage, memory usage, and other parameters.
  3. View the performance information: You can also view performance information by switching to the “Performance” tab, which displays a graph of the CPU, memory, disk, and network usage. You can also see the total usage of each resource.
  4. View the app history: You can check which apps have been used and for how long, by clicking on the “App history” tab.
  5. View the start-up items: You can view which programs are set to start when the computer boots up by clicking on the “Start-up” tab.
  6. End a process: To end a process, select it in the list and click the “End task” button. Be careful when ending processes, as some may be necessary for the proper functioning of the computer.
  7. Change the priority of a process: You can change the priority of a process so that it gets more or fewer resources from the system. Right-click on the process and select the priority level.
  8. Create a dump file: You can create a dump file of a process for further analysis. Right-click on the process and select “Create dump file.”

You can also use the Task Manager to start and stop services, check the status of running services, and even set the startup type of service. This can be done by switching to the “Services” tab.

The Task Manager is a powerful tool that can be used to troubleshoot performance issues, identify resource-hungry processes and apps, and manage running processes and services. With it, you can better understand your computer’s resources and usage.
