Windows 10 Support Ending Next Month! Here’s What It Means For You

September 01, 2025

Attention: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Although your Windows 10 PC will continue to operate beyond this date, Microsoft will cease providing critical services like security patches and technical assistance that keep your system safe and running smoothly.

Why Business Owners Must Act Now

  • Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your systems become increasingly exposed to viruses, malware, and cyberattacks. Protecting your business data demands upgrading to a supported Windows version.
  • Software Compatibility Challenges: Many applications are optimized for the latest operating systems. Post-Windows 10 support, essential programs may malfunction or stop working entirely.
  • Regulatory Compliance Risks: Businesses handling sensitive data or governed by strict regulations risk non-compliance penalties if operating on outdated software. Staying current helps avoid costly fines and legal issues.

Your Upgrade Options Explained

Microsoft recommends upgrading to the newest Windows version before support ends. However, not all Windows 10 devices meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11, and attempting an incompatible upgrade will trigger errors.

If your PC isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these alternatives:

  • Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
  • Enroll in Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESU) program (details below)
  • Switch to a Linux operating system as an alternative
  • Continue using Windows 10 despite risks (not recommended!)

Before making any changes, always back up your important files to safeguard your data during the transition.

Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10

If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, you can purchase Extended Security Updates from Microsoft to continue receiving critical patches. Keep in mind, ESU is a temporary fix, available only for one year after October 14, 2025.

To enroll in ESU, you can pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points. There is also a no-cost option, which requires enabling Windows Backup to sync your settings and files to OneDrive. Note that OneDrive offers 5 GB free storage, so additional space may be necessary for large data volumes.

Don't delay—register for ESU before the October 14 deadline to ensure continued protection.
